How to get there?
From San Jose, take the North Pan-American Highway (route #1) until you get to the community of Limonal, and from here take the exit for the bridge La Amistad de Taiwan (route #18). Continue on this route passing by the towns of Quebrada Honda, Tres Esquinas and Pueblo Viejo. Now take the route #21 that goes to Nicoya and then the exit for Nicoya and keep driving on the route #150 towards Curime. Take the exit for Dulce Nombre to then pass by Gamalotal, Virginia and Guastomatal, finally arriving to Nosara and Ostional.

This coastal zone has protected areas of great biological importance, and also different sites from where you can enjoy unforgettable sceneries.

Playa Azul was named after the blue color of the sand that shines along the coast. This is one of the most beautiful and exclusive beaches of Costa Rica. It is a quiet place of exuberant vegetation, where groups of monkeys live and you can hear the relaxing sound of the waves.

In Punta Eriza, towards the north, there is a cliff from where you can appreciate a panoramic view of the shore, all the way to Punta Trinidad, towards the south.

It is located between two communities, Marbella to the north and San Juanillo to the south. Marbella is visited by surfers from all around the world, and from San Juanillo (4 km away) many boats arrange sportfishing and diving tours.

Going south, passing by Punta India, you will arrive to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, which is formed by a coastline that is divided in two beaches by Punta Division: Nosara and Ostional.

This protected area has an extension of 352 land hectares and 8.000 marine hectares, with the purpose of preserving the spot where thousands of ridley turtles lay their eggs.

This natural phenomenon is known as arrival and occurs every month, especially from July through September in the estuary and in the sites called La Roca and Las Cocineras. This happens during the moons last quarter because the turtles are affected by the phases of the moon. Turtles can arrive in periods that go from 3 to 8 consecutive days.

Other species also come to this dark sand beach to lay their eggs, extending over 900 meters between Punta India and Punta Guiones. These species are leatherback turtles, from October through April, and green and hawksbill turtles, with fewer individuals.

Among the natural attractions of this beach, you can see natural pools that form during low tide, which are located in the north section and have plenty of life in them: invertebrates, fish and sea birds. Besides, the Rio Ostional can be traveled by boat, where you can appreciate the mangrove swamps of this zone.

Next to this beach you will find the Nosara Biological Reserve, a private property with an extension of 35 hectares, located along the Rio Nosara. It protects many species of flora and fauna and goes through the coastline of Ostional, mountain formations, the estuary of the Rio Nosara and the forest.

Here you can find a great variety of bird species like toucans and garcillas, among others. Mammals like monkeys, raccoons and coatis also live in this area and can be easily seen. When you visit this place, you will be given a map and a list of the tree species found in the reserve, and an English-speaking guide will lead you through the area.

The town of Nosara is well developed and has all types of services for its tourists, from surf and yoga lessons to massages and gyms. This community also has a strong ecological awareness, where they maintain sustainable tourism practices and avoid the construction of massive structures.

Playa Nosara has light-colored sand, and here is where the rivers Nosara and Montaa join to form a delta that is surrounded by exuberant vegetation. The estuary and mangrove swamp can be traveled by boat or kayak.

Playa Pelada is next to this beach and has the shape of a bay, where you can rest under the shade of a tree. Playa Guiones is 7 km long and is frequently visited by surfers from all around the world. This beach is very peaceful and has no stores or businesses in front of it.

It begins in Punta Nosara in the north, and Punta Pelada separates it from Guiones in the south. From this end you can appreciate an amazing scenery of the coast and the surroundings.

Playa Guiones is perfect for walking along the beach and enjoying its large and slow waves. You wont see any buildings in the shore, although you can see them in the mountains. This beach has dense vegetation, as well as sets of coral reefs in the ends that serve as shelter from strong oceanic currents. These reefs also invite tourists to appreciate their wide diversity of marine life.

The beaches Pelada, Guiones and Ostional have received the Ecological Blue Flag, which is a program that promotes the conservation and sustainable development under good sanitary and safety conditions.

In the town of Nosara you can find many facilities such as supermarkets, stores, health stands and schools. There are public payphones available as well as broadband Internet connection.

All the beaches of this area receive surfers from many different places that are looking for strong waves. Here you can practice several activities such as sportfishing, birdwatching, playing tennis, snorkeling and surfing.

You can also go hiking, horseback riding, walking or kayaking.

In Santa Cruz and Nicoya there are medical services, banks, bars, discotheques and a great variety of restaurants.

Accommodations and gastronomy
There are hotels that offer basic facilities for their guests and that organize tours to the interesting sites of the region. They have laundry service and wireless Internet connection.

Some of them also offer transportation from and to the Juan Santamaria International Airport, and you can rent 4WD vehicles and bicycles. This city also has luxurious villas and furnished and equipped apartments.

The restaurants have panoramic views of the beach, the river and the evergreen forest. They prepare several meals with fish and seafood. The bars have relaxed and romantic ambiences where you can choose from a wide variety of cocktails.

In this zone there are many restaurants that have all types of dishes. Theres even an ice cream shop to pleasure the most demanding tastes.
