Once here, you must take the exit for Sardinal (route #151) and continue to the deviation for Playas del Coco, turning left.

From San Jose, take the North Pan-American Highway on the route #1 to the deviation for the bridge La Amistad (route #8) that crosses the Rio Tempisque, about 10 km after the intersection of Las Juntas of Abangares. After crossing the bridge, continue to the next intersection on the route #21 heading north, passing by Santa Cruz and arriving to the town of Comunidad. Once here you must take the exit for Sardinal (route #151) and continue to the deviation for Playas del Coco and Ocotal, turning left.

Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal are part of the Bay of Ocotal, which is located in the north coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste. This zone has many interesting sites for tourists, with beaches that have little and soft waves and dry tropical forests, as well as many facilities.

This area is located in the Gulf of Papagayo, which has undergone an important tourism development, except for the area of the Santa Rosa National Park.

Playa del Coco is one of the most visited beaches along the pacific coast of Costa Rica. Many boat tours are arranged from here towards different beautiful and interesting places that are hard to access, like Ollie’s

Point and Roca Bruja, which are famous sites for surfing. The Islas Catalinas are also found here, which are perfect for diving.

Downtown you can rent 4WD vehicles to travel everywhere and get to know the area really well. You can also take horseback riding tours or boat tours.

This beach of gray sands extends for 3 km and is U-shaped, and has cliffs on the ends that serve as barriers for oceanic currents. From its coast you can see the islet Centinela, which has white sand and a small cove.

About 3 km away you will find the peaceful Playa Ocotal. It has soft waves ideal for bathing, dark gray-colored sand and trees that serve as shelter from the shiny, hot sun.

In the north section of the beach you can find the peak La Flor, a rocky formation with species of the dry tropical forest. It is 80 million years old, as well as Punto Cirial, towards the south.

Close to this point, under its crystal-clear waters, there’s a rich marine life where you can see all types of species like tropical fish, manta rays and moray eels. This is one of the best spots for snorkeling and diving, where you can get the PADI certification. Another interesting place for diving is “Las Corridas”.

You can also practice deep-water fishing in the nearby Bahia Pez Vela or in Isla Cantina. There are kayaking and boat tours available, where groups of dolphins might join you along the way. Humpback and pilot whales visit these waters from December through April.

Ocotal is used for the anchorage of fishing boats because of its calm waters and the protection it provides against strong winds.

This zone can be easily accessed thanks to a road that is in good conditions and has direct entrances to the beach.

Accommodations and gastronomy
In Playas del Coco there’s a great variety of places to stay that will adjust to the needs and budget of their guests. Here you will find cabins, apartments and villas.

Ocotal has only luxury villas and apartments with impressive panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, which are built in front of the beach, are fully equipped and have balconies and swimming pools.

These places organize tours to the main tourist destinations of the region and also offer transportation service from and to the Juan Santamaria Airport.

Restaurants here serve a wide diversity of dishes, from Japanese, Italian and Costa Rican meals to pizzas, hamburgers and fried chicken. There are no fast food chain restaurants.
