How to get there?
From San Jose, take the North Pan-American Highway on the route #1 until you get to Esparza. Once here, take the exit for the route #17 to Barranca and to Puntarenass harbor where you take the ferry to Paquera. Once you cross over, continue on the route #160 in direction to Cobano, passing by Tambor, Montezuma and Cabuya. Keep going and youll pass by the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve, Malpais and Santa Teresa.

This region of Costa Rica has beautiful beaches with strong waves that are surrounded by vegetation. Over time, more and more national and international tourists have visited these places in search for relaxation and adventure.

This zone includes the beaches of Malpais, Santa Teresa, Montezuma and Tambor, which receive tourists from all around the world. These beaches are perfect for surfing because the shore is open-sea exposed and has very big and strong waves.

The beaches extend over large territories and have a light golden color with typical shore vegetation, like palm trees and pochotes. There are also rocky structures that form natural pools during low tide, where you can rest and shelter from strong ocean currents.

Due to the large number of tourists that come from all around the world, a fast development has been taking place where you can find all types of services and facilities, such as drugstores, dentists and chiropractors.

However, the closest hospital is located in Nicoya.

Its amazing beauty attracts international celebrities like famous actors and models, but always keeping a hippie and relaxed environment. You can get a relaxing and stress-free massage in the beach or in a spa.

In Montezuma there is a set of incredibly beautiful waterfalls with different heights from where you can jump to the pools that form at their bases (being very careful and with the help of a rope). You can get to these waterfalls by walking through some trails and climbing some hills.

The beaches of Santa Teresa, Malpais and Montezuma have a very active nightlife. There are several bars that organize special events during high season.

The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is located in this area, a few kilometers away from Playa Cabuya, and is home to many types of marine birds and trees of the primary forest.

The residents of this area, along with some owners of properties in the surroundings of the reserve, have committed to the preservation of nature when they formed the Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary and the Wildlife Refuge of the Community of Penjamo.

In Playa Manzanillo, next to the other beaches, theres a sand castle competition that lasts for 3 days, held in March or April. A lot of people come to this contest, where they can also find traditional food stands and be part of concerts, balls, soccer games and horse races. The earnings are used for the communitys improvement.

Accommodations and gastronomy
This zone offers a great culinary variety, where you can have traditional Costa Rican dishes such as casados, or Italian, Thai, Japanese, Argentinean and Spanish dishes, like their famous tapas (type of appetizers).

There are also snacks like hamburgers and hot dogs in many food stands and small restaurants, even though there are no fast food chain restaurants.
You have many options of places to stay, like different low-price hostels that include breakfast in their rates. There are also hotels that have from large green areas and swimming pools to relaxation centers (spas) for their guests.

In Playa Tambor you can find the only hotel that belongs to an international hotel chain.
