By: Melissa Solis C.

The Rincon de la Vieja National Park is one of the destinations you shouldnt miss during your vacations in Costa Rica, surrounded by endless natural landscapes next to the volcano, with an altitude of 1.916 meters above sea level.

Located towards the north of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste, the park is formed by nine eruptive focuses. Besides, its an impressive sample of the power of the depths of Earth, visited by more than 43.000 people every year.

Its average annual temperature is 26C, and the average rainfall is 2.000 mm.

Besides the active craters, there are hot springs, waterfalls and very different sceneries from the dry forest in the low lands (different from the rest of the region). The park also shelters a large population of Guarias Moradas (purple orchids), the national flower of Costa Rica.

By reaching the highest part of the volcano you can appreciate the Lake of Nicaragua, the Gulf of Santa Elena and Culebra Bay, specially during the summer.

Studies in the park have registered 257 bird species like the pavon, the blue-crowned motmot, the mountain goldfinch and the collared aracari. There are small populations of mammals like deer, sloths, pumas and tapirs.
