Casona Santa Rosa continues with restoration
22 from Octuber from 2012
The works will end by late 2012, and for the reopening there will be special activities
By: Melissa Solis C.

The Casona Santa Rosa, heritage of the country, located in Guanacaste in the Santa Rosa National Park, continues its restoration after the structure was damaged over the years. The last breakings occurred with the earthquake of Nicoya on September 5th.

The restoration process started in September of last year by the authorities of the Historical Heritage Center of the Ministry of Culture and the company America Ingenieria S.A.

Even though the original budget of the restoration was 170 million (around $340.000), it will cost 245 million (around $490.000).

In May of 2001, the Casona was destroyed 80% by a fire caused by hunters, so it was rebuilt in 2002. The original building didnt burn down because it was demolished in 1894 by its owner back then, the Nicaraguan doctor Manuel Barrios.

The last restoration wasnt properly done, since only 10 years later it already requires an emergency intervention.

The works will end by late 2012, and for the reopening there will be special activities.

Vacations in the Santa Rosa National Park

This park was named after the Casona Santa Rosa National Monument. On March 20th, 1856, the most important battle against the American freebooters took place here, which came from Nicaragua led by William Walker. They wanted to take over the country and implement their political ideals.

In Santa Rosa tourists can visit the most important dry tropical forest in Central America, where the popular Research Center of the Dry Tropical Forest is located.

During rainy season, the park is full of vegetation, but during dry season it loses most of its foliage, becoming a dry tropical forest.

It has different habitats of savannah, pasturelands and mangrove swamps, including endangered species. Its beautiful beaches Nancite and Naranjo are very important for the nesting of ridley and leatherback turtles.

The Santa Rosa National Park forms a biological corridor with the national parks of Guanacaste and Rincon de la Vieja, with a total of 120.000 land hectares and 70.000 marine hectares.

You can find 115 types of mammals like jaguars, pumas, tapirs, deer and coatis, 253 kinds of birds and 100 species of amphibians and reptiles. The most common reptiles are ridley, hawksbill, leatherback and green turtles, rattlesnakes and iguanas.
