By: Melissa Solis C.

Townships, communities and arranged groups started working on June 1st on the project “Costa Rica Verde y Limpia” (Green and Clean Costa Rica), with the purpose of creating awareness and responsibility in the management of wastes at beaches, coasts and rivers of the country.

This campaign declared of national interest has two parts: cleaning and education + awareness. Even though there are only a few collects left during June, the program will continue on September 21st, 22nd and 23rd, 2012.

The project arose as an initiative from the Terra Nostra Association (ATN), the Ministry of Health and Teletica, with the purpose of joining forces to recover the basin Virilla-Tarcoles. The idea of the campaign is to collect wastes and garbage every month inside the territory of the basin, with at least 200 volunteers per activity, which are brought from the Great Metropolitan Area.

The cleaning has taken place in several locations, such as Tortuguero, Playa Azul, Garabito and Guacalillo, which can be visited as from September.

Terra Nostra is in charge of the waste logistic trainings in order to make the campaign as effective as possible.

The collected items will be included in the report presented by Costa Rica to the International Coastal Cleanup Program of Ocean Conservancy (OC).

ATN has the support of the Ministry of Environment (MINAET), the Water and Sewage Institute of Costa Rica (AyA) and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), as well as from private companies like Alimentos Pro Salud-Sardimar, Coca Cola and Coopenae.

Costa Rica has been participating in the International Coastal Cleanup Program for 8 years, but it has been applied in other countries since 26 years ago.
