About Wetlands in Costa Rica:

As part of the natural richness of the country, there are very important wetlands that cover 7% of the national territory.

The modifications of these habitats, like deforestation, physical and chemical pollution, unmeasured wildlife removal and increase in infrastructure, among others, produce an environmental imbalance that affects the health of the communities.

The importance of wetlands relies in the multiple benefits they give to human populations, like flood control, protection against storms, water storage and purification, power generation, fishing and wildlife, just to mention some.

These ecosystems provide lots of benefits, some we know and use and others that haven’t been discovered yet, representing a potential usage.

Costa Rica celebrated World Day of Wetlands
15 from February from 2012
The country has shown important progress in the conservation of these ecosystems, but still there are some challenges pending

With the purpose of creating awareness in the authorities and population about the importance of wetlands, environmentalists celebrated on February 6th, 2012 the World Day of Wetlands in Costa Rica.

The country has shown important progress in the conservation of these ecosystems, but still there are some challenges pending.

One of them is to handle the threats of the wetlands in the South Pacific, Caño Negro, the Gulf of Nicoya and the Central Caribbean, which have been affected by unmeasured urban development, tourism projects, power generation and other works.

Other initiatives are the projects Mangle-Benin and Ecoticos. The first one is related to the mangrove swamps of the Gulf Dulce and the second one with the Terraba-Sierpe National Wetland.

The Constitutional Court resolved that “wetlands shouldn’t be created by decree”, which is a relief and great conquest for environmentalists.

The National Front for the Protection of Wetlands said: “these ecosystems are a transition between land and marine life, besides being excellent allies against climate change thanks to their great ability of capturing carbon”.
